Concerning The Prayer That Will Shake The World
June 1, 1934
When we call upon God, we are asking him to act where we cannot act, to do something which we cannot do, to bring into being something which we ourselves do not know how to create.
What we mean by our prayer, what we are seeking, is for the impossible to happen, for something to be changed irrevocably which we could never change; we are asking for a history to unfold with which we have nothing to do, for something to happen for which we ourselves could never be responsible.
Thus it is something not dependent upon our praying, our preaching or our reading of sermons.
The question is--Do we have the faith that through our prayer the history of the world can be shattered? Can we believe that at our call Christ will come among us to judge and save?
The question is--When we call upon the Holy Spirit are we ready for him to strike us like a burst of flaming lightning, so that at last we experience Pentecost?
When we ask in faith for God's Kingdom to come to all men at our bidding that is indeed a cataclysmic request, and this unheard-of question is directed--not by us but by Jesus--at us all, whether we are baptized members or novices. He directs this question to us in all that he says. In fact, the actual question is--Are we really able to believe that this breaking-in, the breaking-in of God's Kingdom is imminent? Are we capable of believing that through our pleading and through the resultant coming-down of the Holy Spirit, with all its consequences, this breaking-in of God's Kingdom will take place? Further, are we able to believe that as a result of our prayer the entire history of the world will be turned topsy-turvy--the history of the German state, of France and England, of Austria, Italy and Switzerland, Poland and Russia? Do we have the faith to throw our planet earth, all the fixed stars and suns, off course by our invocation?
And I am not suggesting that this will show we are stronger than other people, but just the opposite.
What we are calling for, and what we ask to be brought about, the substance of our prayer--is none other than that which God already wants--for which he has waited, however, until we are ready. And our readiness is proved by the genuineness of our prayer. And this is why it is through us that this genuine prayer has to come to God. This is the very reason that it must happen, that the Holy Spirit must come to us through our calling upon God in faith.....

Was wir in unserer Anrufung Gottes suchen, das ist wirklich eine Handlung, die nicht unsere Handlung ist, eine Tat, die nicht unsere Tat ist, eine Tatsache, die nicht wir bilden können. Was wir meinen und suchen in der Anrufung ist, dass etwas passieren soll, was durch uns nie passieren kann, das endlich etwas geschehen soll, dessen Geschehen wir niemals herbeiführen können, dass endlich etwas angerichtet werden soll, was wir niemals anrichten können, dass endlich Geschichte wird, die wir niemals machen können, dass ein Richten zu uns komme, was wir niemals hervorrufen können.
Also nicht um unser Beten handelt es sich oder um unser Predigen oder Vorlesungen von Predigten handelt es sich. Es geht

darum, ob wir den Glauben haben, dass auf unsere Anrufung hin die Welt erschüttert werde, dass auf unser Herbeirufen hin Christus als der Richter und der Retter unter uns zupackt. Es geht darum, ob wir auf unsere Heranrufung hin erwarten, dass der heilige Geist herabbricht als ein zündender und alles entflammender Blitz, dass endlich das Pfingsterlebnis unter uns werde. Wenn wir im Glauben rufen, dass das Reich Gottes komme zu allen Menschen auf unsere Anrufung hin, das ist ganz ungeheuerlich, was hier gefragt wird, und diese Frage richten nicht wir, sondern diese unerhörte Frage richtet Jesus an uns alle, ob Bruderschafter oder Novizen. In allen seinen Worten richtet er diese Frage an uns. Es ist nämlich die Frage, ob wir den Glauben haben, dass das Einbrechen, der Einbruch des Gottesreiches bevorsteht und ob wir den Glauben haben, dass auf unser Rufen dieses Einbrechen des Reiches Gottes durch die Herabkunft

des heiligen Geistes geschieht – und weiter, ob wir auch den Glauben haben, dass auf unsere Anrufung hin die Weltgeschichte bewegt, die ganze Weltgeschichte, - des deutschen Reiches, Frankreichs, Englands, Österreichs, Italiens, der Schweiz, Polens, Russlands und aller anderen Erdteile – ob wir den Glauben haben, dass unser Planet und alle Fixsterne und Sonnen auf unsere Anrufung hin bewegt werden.
Und nicht ist es so gemeint, als ob wir stärker wären als andere Menschen, sondern ganz umgekehrt ist es gemeint: warum wir rufen und was wir herbeirufen, was der Inhalt unserer Anrufung ist, ist nichts anderes als das, was Gott schon immer will, wofür er aber auf Bereitschaft wartet. Und die wahrhafte Anrufung ist diese Bereitschaft! Und deshalb gelangt auf die wahrhafte Anrufung hin Gott bei uns an! Deshalb kommt die Tat, deshalb kommt der heilige Geist bei uns an, wenn wir in diesem Glauben Gott rufen …
